On Wednesday (June 28), President Joe Biden faced criticism across social media after he made a blunder in which he claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin was “losing the war in Iraq.”
Address a reporter outside the White House on Wednesday, Biden confidently declared that while it is “hard to tell,” Putin is “clearly losing the war in Iraq.”
The gaffe came in response to a question about the extent Putin has been weakened by recent events on the war front, including reports there had been a coup attempt by a mercenary group.
Without correcting himself, Biden continued that Putin is “losing the war at home,” and had become a “pariah around the world.”
Conservatives on social media quickly Seized on Biden’s comment, calling it another example of his frequent gaffes and a sign of his diminishing mental acuity.
Abigail Marone, the communications director for Republican Senator Josh Hawley (MO.), tweeted in response to the clip, “Biden is clearly losing his war with sanity.”
On the Senate Republicans’ Twitter account, the clip of the gaffe was captioned, “Joe Biden has totally lost the plot.”
A day earlier, Biden made a similar mistake at a fundraiser.
At the event, the President referred to the war as the war in “Iraq” instead of Ukraine and again failed to correct his mistake.
The gaffes came after a Morning Consult poll published Tuesday (June 27) revealed that 44 percent of respondents would cast their ballot for former President Donald Trump, while only 41 percent would choose Biden.
It also comes amid criticism by those in Biden’s camp that his age seems to be a bigger issue than Trump’s, despite the President only being three years older than his Republican contender.
