Joe Exotic, star of the Netflix series “Tiger King,” announced he had entered the 2024 Presidential Race as a Libertarian.
On March 10, from a federal prison in Atlanta, where Exotic — real name Joseph Maldonado — is currently serving a 21-year prison sentence, the Netflix star tweeted his entrance into the 2024 Presidential race.
He tweeted, “It’s official! I am now a candidate for President of the United States in 2024,” along with a link to his campaign website and a screenshot of his Federal Election Commission candidate information.
Exotic is currently serving time in federal prison for hiring a hitman to murder Carole Baskin, a wildlife activist, killing tigers, and selling tigers across state lines.
Although he is currently incarcerated, no laws prevent Exotic from running for President.
Instead, the only Constitutional Criteria to run for President is that a candidate must be:
35 years old or older (Exotic is 60 years old)
Be a natural-born citizen and have resided in the United States for a minimum of 14 years; criteria the inmate meets.
The former Netflix star ran for Governor of Oklahoma in 2018 as a Libertarian, but he lost the party’s primary.
On Sunday (March 26), in an interview with Fox News, Exotic acknowledged that he was joining a race — he’s unlikely to win — to make changes to the United States judicial and political systems.
He asserted he was making his bid because things “have to be changed in our country,” highlighting the political system, Department of Justice, and the U.S. prison system.
Exotic added he would pursue reducing the United States’ role on the global stage, saying the country has to “quit policing the rest of the world… and… have to quit funding everybody else’s culture.”
