(Patriot.Buzz) – A Tennessee woman’s desperate attempt to eliminate her romantic rival resulted in a grim legal battle and an even grimmer sentence.
Melody Sasser’s dark web dealings and payment of nearly $10,000 in Bitcoin to a hitman have landed her in prison for the next eight years.
48-year-old Sasser from Tennessee attempted to hire a hitman to murder the wife of a man she met on Match.com.
Although the elaborate murder-for-hire plot went nowhere, it showcased her use of the “Online Killers Market” and Bitcoin transactions.
Sasser pleaded guilty to using interstate commerce facilities for a murder-for-hire.
She paid $9,750 in Bitcoin, while requesting the killing appear random or accidental. Her baffling plan failed and resulted in a federal indictment in June 2023.
Sasser received a 100-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay over $5,289 in restitution.
An investigation revealed she used the dark web hitman site, and authorities found incriminating evidence, including a journal detailing her plot and a Bitcoin address.
“I have waited for 2 months and 11 days and the job is not completed. 2 weeks ago you said it was been worked on and would be done in a week. the job is still not done. does it need to be assigned to someone else? will it be done? what is the delay? when will it be done, [SIC]”, Sasser wrote.
Sasser tracked the victim and her husband using the Strava app linked to their Garmin watches.
She left threatening voicemails using a voice-disguising device. The plot was so meticulously planned that it involved planting drugs to avoid a long investigation.
“It needs to seem random or accident. or plant drugs, do not want a long investigation. She recently moved in with her new husband,” Sasser penned.
Sasser’s criminal venture began after she met JW on Match.com. They became hiking partners, but things took a dark turn when JW moved to Alabama and got engaged.
Sasser’s jealousy drove her to take drastic measures, leaving her facing serious criminal charges and a lengthy sentence.
Although she initially pleaded not guilty, the overwhelming evidence against Sasser forced her to confess.
Her attorney stated she is remorseful, but the consequences of her actions are severe, ensuring that justice was served.
