(Patriot.Buzz) – Kamala Harris is currently under fire, as Indian-Americans have said they are concerned since the Democrat seems to minimize her Indian heritage while emphasizing her Jamaican background.
This came shortly after she entered the presidential race, with reports suggesting her Indian roots are rarely highlighted.
Former Bush administration official and conservative activist Suhail Khan noted that Harris prioritizes her African-American identity to appeal to Black voters.
Black voters are a significant base for the Democrat Party and were a crucial demographic for Joe Biden in the 2020 primaries.
Indian-American conservative commentator Akash Chougule criticized Harris for using her ethnic background opportunistically.
“While she might want to lean into her ethnic background when it is politically convenient to do so, the reality is that it does not matter,” he stated.
“What matters are her policy positions, which would be a nightmare for most Americans and especially for the Indian-American community,” he added.
The media has often focused on Harris’s Black identity to leverage the long history of discrimination against Black individuals, according to leftwing outlet Vox.
For instance, when Harris was elected to the Senate in 2016, she was recognized as the second Black woman to achieve this, but her status as the first Indian-American woman to do so was largely overlooked.
This pattern seemed to continue with coverage of her presidential campaign. Her milestones as the first Black woman to hold significant roles were mentioned, but her Indian-American heritage was not acknowledged.
Chougule further slammed Harris for policies he believes do not favor the values held by many Indian-Americans.
“She’s made very clear that she does not look highly upon entrepreneurship. She does not look highly upon meritocracy. The administration supports affirmative action, which harms Indian-American applicants to college,” he stressed.
Former State Department senior advisor Ricky Gill and Indian-born Republican strategist Jahan Wilcox also shared their views.
Gill indicated that Harris seems to have distanced herself from the Indian-American community by design.
Meanwhile, Wilcox suggested that voters are judging her more on the Biden-Harris administration’s economic and energy policies, which have “made life more difficult for all Americans.”
