Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) slammed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday. The GOP-led House is currently preparing to launch an investigation and possible impeachment charges against Mayorkas.
During a press conference from Cochise County, Ariz. McCarthy urged that it was time for this to stop and that Mayorkas should not be allowed to lie to the American public any longer. He further pushed for the Homeland Security Secretary to tell the entire truth regarding the border situation so that regulations and solutions can be found in order to secure the border. McCarthy’s press conference had the border fence in the background.
While McCarthy did not allude to what specific lies Mayorkas has said, the Republicans have frequently called for him to testify in a congressional hearing and claim that the border is secure.
Hard-line conservative House Republicans who are preparing to launch impeachment charges against Mayorkas have said that the topic of “operational control” is central to the border situation. The term has been defined by the Secure Fence Act of 2006, to mean that it stops “all unlawful entries,” in the country.
McCarthy has not yet endorsed impeaching Mayorkas but has previously called on him to resign and had said that the House GOP would launch an investigation to determine whether an impeachment inquiry was necessary.
