Here’s what we know so far…

The World Health Organization is now sounding the alarm about the new heavily mutated Omicron COVID-19 variant and have warned that the variant is most likely to spread internationally and had a very high infection rate that could pose “severe consequences” in some areas.

According to Newsmax, there has yet to be any deaths linked to the Omicron variant however further research is needed to understand if the variant is able to resist current vaccines.

The WHO then noted that the Omicron variant has an extremely high number of spike mutations, some of which they fear will change the trajectory of this current pandemic.

“The overall global risk …is assessed as very high,” they further explained.

The WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, noted that this variant shows just how “perilous and precarious” the whole situation has been.

“Omicron demonstrates just why the world needs a new accord on pandemics,” he noted. “Our current system disincentivizes countries from alerting others to threats that will inevitably land on their shores.”
