She is trying to pull off the unthinkable.
As Justice Clarence Thomas’s involvement in January 6 cases after reports revealed his wife campaigned to have the 2020 election overturned, Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called for his resignation. AOC warned that if Thomas didn’t resign, he would face impeachment.
Taking to Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez stated, “Clarence Thomas should resign,” adding that if Thomas failed to resign, there were several ethical breaches that could result in his impeachment.
She listed these ethical breaches, which included “his failure to disclose income from right-wing organizations, recuse himself from matters involving his wife, and his vote to block the Jan 6th commission from key information.” AOC noted that breaches “must be investigated and could serve as grounds for impeachment.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s statements are the latest in a series of Democratic lawmakers and legal experts who’ve called on Thomas to step down as ethical scrutiny mounts following reports that revealed his wife had assisted in attempts to overturn President Trump’s 2020 election defeat.
The reports also draw fresh scrutiny to Thomas’s failure to recuse himself from Jan. 6 cases and his sole opposition to the House Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack’s request for Trump-era White House records.
When the report on Thomas’s wife broke, lawmakers were quick to call for the Justice to recuse himself from cases disputing the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Despite warnings that Thomas would face impeachment if he did not recuse himself, Supreme Court justices are not bound by a code of conduct and can decide on their own accord if recusing themselves is necessary.
