On Thursday (July 6), Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), one of Capitol Jill’s most vocal progressives, backed President Joe Biden’s reelection bid.
In a “Pod Save America” episode, Ocasio-Cortez said she would support Biden, the frontrunner for the Democratic primary, against two long-shot challengers in the primary.
The New York Democrat had shared that “given the field,” she would be throwing her weight behind the incumbent President in the 2024 race.
Ocasio-Cortez added shared her belief that Biden had “done quite well” considering the “limitations” in his three years in office, adding that as was the case in any Presidency, there would be “ebbs and flows.”
Biden is one of three Democrats in the Presidential Race; the other two are self-help author Marianne Williamson, who also ran in 2020, and prominent anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The President is polling far ahead of his Democratic contenders, which will likely go unchanged as the Democratic National Committee revealed it doesn’t have any plans to hold any primary debates.
While discussing Biden’s records so far, Ocasio-Cortez suggested there had been “areas that I think were quite strong,” for Biden, adding that he had pursued the American Rescue Plan immediately.
The New York Democrat also touted the Inflation Reduction Act, which she described as a “massive step in terms of our climate agenda,” but acknowledged there were areas that Biden “could have gone better,” mentioning the Democratic Party’s struggle with immigration.
Following the official launch of Biden’s campaign in late April, several prominent progressives, such as Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Congressional Progressive Caucus Chairwoman Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), threw their support behind Biden.
Before Thursday’s statements, Ocasio-Cortez had made it clear that she would fully support the Democratic Party’s nominees, but she had not yet explicitly expressed her support for Biden’s reelection campaign.
