(Patriot.Buzz) – Exposing the vulnerability of the American postal system and taxpayer dollars, a former postal worker stole $24 million in a mail-devious scheme.
Former USPS employee Nakedra Shannon and her accomplices have been sentenced for their brazen theft of checks, including millions in U.S. Treasury funds.
Shannon, who worked as a mail processing clerk at a USPS distribution center in Charlotte from March 2021 to July 2023, abused her position to steal checks worth over $24 million from the U.S. mail between April and July 2023.
She conspired with Desiray Carter and Donell Gardner to pilfer incoming and outgoing checks, which were then sold to other criminals.
North Carolina Western District U.S. Attorney Dena J. King announced: “U.S. Postal Service employee and a co-conspirator were sentenced to prison yesterday for a scheme involving stolen checks worth over $24 million.”
The stolen checks were brazenly advertised and sold on Telegram’s encrypted messaging app, including on a channel called “OG Glass House.”
This digital black market allowed the criminals to profit quickly from their theft of government and private funds.
For their crimes, Shannon received a 60-month prison sentence, while Carter and Gardner each got 54 months.
They were also ordered to pay $113,333.87 in restitution and will face years of supervised release after serving their time.
The convictions stem from conspiracy to commit financial institution fraud and theft of government property, a significant blow to the integrity of vital institutions.
Multiple federal agencies, including the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of the Inspector General, IRS-Criminal Investigation, and the U.S. Department of Treasury, are involved in investigating this case, which underscores the seriousness of the crime.
Moreover, this case exposes glaring vulnerabilities in the postal system and the ease with which government employees can exploit their positions for personal gain.
As Dena J. King declared, the scheme’s exposure and sentencing exemplify law enforcement’s ceaseless dedication to restoring security and trust in our public systems.
While justice served a heavy-handed correction here, it is a stark reminder of the precautions necessary to guard against similar future transgressions.
American citizens deserve reliable, incorruptible service from their institutions, a standard worth relentlessly defending.
