Amid many of his fellow Republicans blaming former President Donald Trump for Republicans’ dismal results, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz gave Trump his full support for 2024.
Gaetz’s support for Trump came as others in the GOP lashed out at the former President following the loss of many of his endorsed candidates.
But Gaetz, writing in an op-ed for the Daily Caller, emphasized that Trump running in 2024 is “necessary” to “continue to disrupt and serve the people against the Swamp.”
Gaetz wrote that former President Donald Trump’s work was incomplete and that only Trump could be entrusted to “enact the ‘America First’ agenda,” adding the GOP wouldn’t “accept any imitation.”
The Florida Republican criticized establishment figures within the GOP highlighting Paul Ryan and billionaire mega-donor Ken Griffin as offenders, questioning why Republicans would “stop the progress now” and return to figures backed by Wall Street.
His mention of Wall Street-backed Presidential candidates seemingly refers to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Griffin had explained his belief that it was time for the GOP to move on from Trump and toward someone like DeSantis.
Yet Gaetz argues anyone besides Trump wouldn’t be adequate, warning they would push the GOP toward corporate interest and abandon immigration and “draining the Swamp.”
Gaetz emphasized that Trump had earned voters’ trust by keeping promises and had no intentions of becoming a retiree.
He then concluded that under President Joe Biden, the U.S. is broken and that only Trump could fix that.
