On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee hearing about violent crime in New York resulted in chaos after hecklers interrupted the event to shout at Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) that he was a “scumbag.”
During Schiff’s opening remarks, he called out the Republicans for choosing to hold a hearing in New York, claiming that they were only doing so as a way of defending former President Donald Trump, following the recent criminal charges he is set to face in the city. However, while Schiff was delivering his opening remarks he was interrupted by an audience member who called him a “scumbag.”
Following the disruption, Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) attempted to restore order as the Capitol Police escorted the man out of the area.
During the hearing, the man continued by saying that the committee paid “attention to people who are justifying a bunch of families dying.” He proceeded to call everyone scumbags. While the man was being removed by the Capitol police, a different man got up and shouted that this hearing was Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s fault for prosecuting a case against Trump.
He proceeded to say that both Bragg and “Ralph Nader” are “a disgrace to this country.” While it is unclear whom he was referring to, it is possible that the man was trying to refer to committee-ranking member Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.).
“Nader” being called out, led to many lawmakers being confused and some even laughed.
