(Patriot.Buzz) – Looking for a huge red wave to return America to greatness, former President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with congressional Republicans on Capitol Hill today to promote unity within the party as the November elections approach.
This session is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first time Trump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will be in the same room since their fallout in 2020.
Both Republicans have had a rocky relationship since Trump left office, but despite past tensions, their interaction is expected to be civil.
Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) joked, “I imagine it’ll be a big bear hug. They’re both adults. I imagine they’ll be cordial and listen attentively … They’ve both been leaders.”
This visit is one of three stops planned for Trump that day. He will also address House Republicans and the Business Roundtable.
The meetings come at a time when Trump leads over Joe Biden in key battleground states and as Senate Republicans are optimistic about regaining control of the upper chamber.
The main goal for today’s meetings is to align the Republican Party’s strategy as they approach the Republican National Convention next month and navigate the aftermath of Trump’s recent felony conviction in New York.
“Division only helps our opposition,” stated Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), a close McConnell ally. “So unity is really important, and I think President Trump understands that.”
McConnell’s newfound support for Trump looks to boost Senate campaigns in states where Trump remains popular, which would help promote preferred primary candidates.
Trump’s endorsement over the weekend played out with Sam Brown in Nevada, who secured a primary victory with 60% of the vote.
A source mentioned that both Trump and McConnell see benefits in syncing up before November to enhance other Republican candidates’ chances.
The move could potentially help Trump push through major policy goals and allow McConnell to end his leadership on a high note.
“They’re going to have to all be on the same page, and Trump is going to be the one to tell them exactly how to do it,” a GOP strategist said.
However, not all Senate Republicans are expected to warmly receive Trump. Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Mitt Romney have cited conflicts and will not attend the meeting.
