Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has revealed that in his view the most “ominous” legal challenge former President Donald Trump is currently facing is Special Counsel Jack Smith’s federal investigation.
On Wednesday, Christie told talk radio host Hugh Hewitt that Trump needed to be concerned about the Department of Justice (DOJ) probe because the federal agency both has a lot of resources and is handling a very serious incident, the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Trump is currently facing two different investigations by the Department of Justice. The first one is dealing with the classified documents that were discovered and recovered from his Mar-a-Lago home, while the second one deals with Trump’s attempts to overturn the presidential election results in 2020.
The classified documents were originally found in Trump’s possession during an FBI raid that took place in August.
Following Trump’s announcement that he would be running in the 2024 presidential election, Smith was brought in as special counsel to handle the cases relating to Trump. In the past few weeks, Smith’s investigation has intensified with Smith sending subpoenas to a number of people who have been called in to provide their testimony. These include former Vice President Mike Pence, the former president’s eldest daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband former adviser Jared Kushner who have all been called to testify before the grand jury.
His father added that Trump’s biggest legal threat is the one relating to his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election after losing to President Joe Biden.
