Over the weekend, Former President Donald Trump reignited his feud with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY.) as Republicans are growing increasingly concerned that the GOP wouldn’t be able to flip the Senate.
On Saturday (August 20), Trump took to Truth Social to disparage McConnell for his remarks about “candidate quality” that McConnell claimed could stifle the GOP’s attempt to reclaim the majority of the Senate.
Trump, recognizing the dig at many Senate candidates endorsed by him, posted on Truth Social that McConnell was a “broken down hack politician.”
The former President also took a swipe at the Senate Minority Leader’s “crazy wife” Elaine Chao, the former Transportation Secretary who served in Trump’s administration but resigned one day after the deadly January 6 Capitol riots.
Trump questioned, “Why… Republicans [sic] Senators allow a broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate.”
“This is such an affront to honor and to leadership. He should spend more time (and money!) helping them get elected, and less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China!” Trump continued his post.
The dig at McConnell’s wife, who served for eight years as the Labor Secretary under President George W. Bush, and his family is likely a reference to the family’s shipping company, Foremost Group. The company has some connections to China.
Trump could also be referencing last year’s finding by the Department of Transportation that Chao had used department staff for matters relating to the family business.
