(Patriot.Buzz) – In a tragic turn of events, a 20-year-old Southern University student was killed in a deadly fraternity hazing ritual that led to the arrest of three men.

The tragedy exposes the ongoing failure of universities to protect students from dangerous fraternity practices despite decades of similar incidents and numerous state laws designed to prevent them.
Baton Rouge Police have arrested Kyle Thurman and Isaiah Smith, along with previously detained Caleb McCray, in connection with Wilson’s death.
All face charges of manslaughter and criminal hazing after Wilson was repeatedly punched in the chest during an unauthorized Omega Psi Phi fraternity pledge event at an off-campus warehouse.
Police Chief TJ Morse did not mince words about the cause of Wilson’s death, stating he died “as a direct result of a hazing incident where he was punched in the chest multiple times while pledging to Omega Psi Phi.”
What makes this case particularly disturbing is that no one involved called 911 when Wilson became unresponsive.
Instead, Smith, who allegedly held the title “Dean of Pledges” and was responsible for the hazing ritual, drove Wilson to the hospital in his vehicle and initially misled medical staff about what happened.
The hazing took place at a flooring company owned by Smith’s father, not at a city park as first reported.
According to police reports, McCray allegedly punched Wilson four times, causing him to become unresponsive.
This was not a spontaneous event but a planned ritual that continues to persist on college campuses despite being explicitly banned by university policies and state laws.
Smith’s lawyer, Franz Borghardt, said it is important to note that Smith is not accused of making physical contact with Wilson and that no one was aware of any underlying medical conditions he may have had.
“This was a freak accident; we’re not talking about force-feeding alcohol,” Borghardt said. “To be sure, everyone in that fraternity cares about Caleb. Our hearts go out to the Wilson family.”
Louisiana’s Max Gruver Act specifically makes hazing a felony if it results in death or serious injury, carrying penalties including fines and imprisonment.
Southern University has now banned membership intake for all student organizations indefinitely.
Still, this reactive measure comes too late for Wilson, a promising mechanical engineering major and member of the university’s renowned “Human Jukebox” Marching Band.
The university’s statement that “Hazing is a violation of the University’s rules and regulations as well as Louisiana law, and it will not be tolerated in any form at Southern University” raises questions about why these rules weren’t effectively enforced before a student lost his life.
Despite attempts by defense attorneys to control the narrative, the facts speak for themselves.
A young man with a bright future died after being physically assaulted as part of a ritual to join a fraternity – a practice that should have been eliminated from campus life long ago.
Baton Rouge authorities say the investigation is ongoing, with more arrests possible as they continue interviewing witnesses and executing search warrants.
Meanwhile, a memorial service is planned at Southern University to honor Wilson as his community mourns a preventable loss that should serve as yet another wake-up call about the dangers of hazing that continue to plague American universities.
