(Patriot.Buzz) – In 2005, then-aspiring Congressman Tim Walz made a commitment to go with his U.S. Army National Guard unit to Iraq if needed, all while pursuing his political ambitions.
Despite this pledge, Walz walked back on his words and did not deploy with his unit when they went to Iraq.
Walz had made it clear that his campaign for Congress would proceed regardless of his potential deployment, affirming his duty both as a soldier and a candidate.
He even acknowledged the personal sacrifices involved, noting he was ready to leave behind his wife and daughter for service.
However, Walz exited the military as his unit moved out for Iraq.
His campaign had been upfront about the possibility of his deployment. A press release dated March 20, 2005, from Walz’s campaign discussed the potential impact of his military obligations on his run for office.
It read, “Walz Still Planning to Run for Congress Despite Possible Call to Duty in Iraq.”
The release detailed an announcement from the National Guard Public Affairs Office about a possible activation of Minnesota troops, including Walz’s 1-125th Battalion.
Walz, who was a Global Geography teacher and an “active member of the National Guard since 1981,” said, “I do not yet know if my artillery unit will be part of this mobilization and I am unable to comment further on specifics of the deployment.”
Despite the overlap with his congressional campaign, Walz was resolved to continue his candidacy.
“As Command Sergeant Major I have a responsibility not only to ready my battalion for Iraq, but also to serve if called on. I am dedicated to serving my country to the best of my ability, whether that is in Washington DC or in Iraq,” the press release read.
It further stated, “I don’t want to speculate on what shape my campaign will take if I am deployed, but I have no plans to drop out of the race.”
It continued, “I am fortunate to have a strong group of enthusiastic supporters and a very dedicated and intelligent wife. Both will be a major part of my campaign, whether I am in Minnesota or Iraq.”
Despite claiming to be a retired command sergeant major (E-9), Walz actually retired as a master sergeant (E-8) after failing to meet the requirements for a higher rank.
