Why Trump Thinks DeSantis Went Too Far

On Monday, former President Donald Trump blasted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for his abortion stance after he signed a six-week abortion ban.

In an interview with The Messenger that was published on Monday, Trump stated that it was possible that the six-week ban was “too harsh.” However, beyond that Trump avoided elaborating on what his stance on abortion is. Instead, he only argued that from what he had heard even pro-life advocates have opposed DeSantis’ bill.

When asked about the abortion rules, Trump stated that according to many people, DeSantis did not even know what he was doing when he signed the abortion law. He proceeded to argue that there were even those within the pro-life movement who believed that the law was “too harsh.”

Trump was then asked whether he supported restrictions on abortions following the sixth week of pregnancy. To this, the former President claimed that he was considering all options. He proceeded to confirm that he was in favor of exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother was in danger. He added that this was something that he had in common with Ronald Reagan who also believed in exceptions.

DeSantis’ six-week abortion ban does include exceptions in cases of rape and incest, and the state exception protecting the life of the mother is also still in place.

Apart from talking about his abortion stance vaguely, Trump also started touting his own success in getting enough Justices in the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. As he argued this was something that no other President could have done.
