(Patriot.Buzz) – In a doubly alarming development, over $1 million in cocaine landed on a beach in the Florida Keys after Hurricane Debby stormed the Gulf Coast’s Big Bend.

Hitting the coast as a Category 1 hurricane, Debby brought ashore two dozen packages of cocaine as it whipped up winds exceeding 80 miles per hour, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.
“Hurricane Debby blew 25 packages of cocaine (70 lbs.) onto a beach in the Florida Keys,” U.S. Border Patrol’s acting chief patrol agent Samuel Briggs II announced on social media.
Briggs also shared images of the cocaine, which was packaged in taped-up bricks marked with a distinctive glowing red triangular symbol. He noted that the drugs carried a street value of over $1 million.
A person walking along the beach found the drugs hidden inside a trash bag surrounded by a mix of seaweed, leaves and other storm debris, based on photos shared in response to Briggs’ post.
After discovering the illegal cargo, the individual alerted the authorities, allowing the U.S. Border Patrol to seize it.
It is not uncommon for bricks of cocaine and other narcotics to end up on the beaches of southern Florida, where they are often dropped off by smugglers coming from South America.
In a related incident in June, a person looking for sea turtle nests on a northern Florida beach unexpectedly came across cocaine bricks worth $4 million.
This particular find was surprising to local law enforcement, as it occurred in Nassau County, a location much farther north than the usual landing spots for such contraband.
Meanwhile, Debby, now downgraded to a tropical storm, continues to be a threat as it moves northward from Florida through Georgia and into the Carolinas. It is expected to cause significant rain and flooding.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 61 counties, with over 274,000 homes currently without power.
The storm has already taken four lives, including a 13-year-old boy who tragically died when a tree fell on his family’s house.
