(Patriot.Buzz) – In an alarming situation for Americans’ food supply, Walmart’s Great Value chicken broth recall escalates to Class II health risk, potentially endangering consumers in nine states.
The Food Drug Administration’s (FDA) involvement raises questions about food supply safety and the effectiveness of government oversight.
TreeHouse Foods, a Canadian-based company, is recalling over 12,000 cartons of chicken broth sold at Walmart under the Great Value brand.
The recall affects products in 242 Walmart stores across nine U.S. states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
The FDA has upgraded the recall to Class II, indicating potential temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
The affected broth cartons have an expiration date of March 2025 and UPC code ‘007874206684.’
While no illnesses have been reported so far, the potential for harm remains a serious concern, and consumers should be aware of this and check their pantries immediately.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted product from the select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate,” a Walmart spokesperson said.
Walmart claims to have removed the affected products from stores and is working with the supplier to investigate.
Yet, many wonder how this happened in the first place and why the agency took so long to elevate the risk classification.
The recall was initiated due to potential packaging failures that could compromise product sterility and lead to possible contamination by bacteria, yeasts, molds, and other organisms.
Even more concerning, spoilage may not always be detectable by appearance, taste, or texture, and effects might only be felt after consumption.
This is not an isolated incident. TreeHouse Foods previously recalled gluten-free, organic waffles due to possible listeria contamination.
Walmart has also faced other recent recalls, including Quaker’s Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix for undeclared milk and a public health alert for mislabeled Chicken Curry Empanadas.
