The severity of this situation demands an urgent public health response, focusing on education and prevention.
The fatalities were reported in individuals exposed to infected ticks in Tecate, Mexico.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever, caused by the Rickettsia rickettsii bacteria, transmits through the bites of ticks like the American dog tick, Rocky Mountain wood tick, and brown dog tick.
The last reported cases involved six individuals from California, with three resulting in death, Newsweek reports.
These infections, occurring between July 2023 and January 2024, were linked to exposure in Tecate, a location now marked as high-risk despite its previous safety status.
Victims displayed early symptoms such as fever, headache, and muscle pain.
Left untreated, the disease can lead to life-threatening complications, including organ damage.
According to health experts, early administration of antibiotics can dramatically reduce the risk of mortality from 13-25% to just 3-5%.
This urgent timeline underscores the critical importance of awareness and rapid treatment.

Unfortunately, not all healthcare providers recognize the symptoms swiftly enough to prevent escalation.
“Anyone who’s traveled to northern Mexico and develops symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever within two weeks of their return to the US should get medical attention right away,” the CDC said, cited by WRAL.
From 2022 data, RMSF is primarily prevalent in southeastern and south-central states, with California holding a traditionally low occurrence rate.
However, this deadly outbreak serves as a grave warning about the potential for overlooked endemic diseases.
The California Department of Public Health reported that exposed individuals ranged from 17 months to 65 years old, emphasizing the non-discriminatory nature of the disease.
Healthcare officials have reinforced the importance of preventive measures like using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and checking oneself for ticks after outdoor activities.
Prompt recognition and treatment with doxycycline are crucial to reducing fatalities and preventing similar tragedies.
“RMSF is a severe, rapidly progressive, and often deadly disease transmitted by the bite of infected ticks, although many patients do not recall being bitten by a tick,” the CDC stated.
The CDC continues to alert healthcare providers to the necessity of starting treatment immediately if RMSF symptoms surface, especially in those who’ve traveled to northern Mexico.
