Threatening summer comfort for countless families, Midea air conditioners are being yanked from American homes as a government-mandated recall of 1.7 million units for posing a health risk.
The Chinese-manufactured cooling systems, sold through major retailers nationwide, were found to harbor dangerous mold growth, which has already caused respiratory infections and illness among American consumers.
Midea, a Chinese appliance giant, is recalling approximately 1.7 million air conditioners in the United States and nearly 46,000 more in Canada after their U and U+ Window Air Conditioner models were found to promote hazardous mold growth.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the removal after determining the units pose serious health risks.
These include respiratory infections and allergic reactions to unsuspecting American families who purchased the foreign-made appliances.
The faulty units were sold between March 2020 and May 2025 through major American retailers including Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy, Amazon, Lowes.com, Walmart.com, and BJs.com.
Priced between $280 and $500, these Chinese and Thai-manufactured units feature a U-shaped design that prevents proper water drainage, creating perfect conditions for harmful mold to flourish inside homes across America.
Alarmingly, there have already been 152 reports of mold growth in these units, with 17 consumers suffering health consequences, including respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throat.
The CPSC did not hesitate to criticize the danger, stating that the affected units “pose risks of respiratory issues or other infections to some consumers.”
The affected units are white, approximately 22 inches wide and 14 inches high, and were sold in 8,000 BTU, 10,000 BTU, and 12,000 BTU sizes.
While marketed under various brand names, all share the same dangerous design flaw: They allow water to pool inside the unit, creating ideal breeding grounds for toxic mold that can then be circulated throughout American homes.

This massive recall represents yet another example of potentially dangerous foreign-made products flooding American homes.
Meanwhile, liberal media once praised these units, with The New York Times having previously rated the Midea U Window Air Conditioner as their top pick.
American families are now left dealing with the health consequences and inconvenience of removing these appliances during peak summer heat.
“This U-shaped Midea air conditioner is the quietest model we’ve ever tested, and it’s designed in a way that still allows you to open your window. But the installation process isn’t fun,” the liberal media said.
Consumers who own these dangerous units can contact Midea directly to opt for either a repair or a refund.
Those concerned about potential exposure should check their air conditioner’s brand and model number against the recall list.
This massive recall serves as a reminder of the hidden costs of relying on cheaply made foreign appliances rather than supporting American manufacturing that prioritizes consumer safety and quality.
