Due to undisclosed ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions, nearly half a million pounds of breakfast sandwiches have been recalled from military bases nationwide.
Hearthside Food Solutions is recalling roughly 489,887 pounds of Lettieri’s ready-to-eat sausage and bacon breakfast sandwich products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen.
Announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recall specifically involves sesame flour in the French Toast component that was not disclosed on the product labels.
The affected products were produced between April 1, 2023, and March 25, 2025, and have a 12-month shelf life.
This extensive production timeframe means thousands of military personnel may have potentially been exposed to these mislabeled products, though thankfully no adverse reactions have been reported so far.
The recall specifically targets 8.35-ounce Lettieri’s Food To Go Sausage, Egg & Cheese French Toast Breakfast Sandwich and 7.3-ounce Lettieri’s Food To Go Bacon, Egg & Cheese French Toast Breakfast Sandwich.
These products bear the establishment number “EST. V4907” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were mainly distributed to Army & Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES) locations across the United States.
The USDA has issued an urgent warning about these products due to the potential severity of sesame allergies.
Consumers who have these sandwiches, which feature lot codes beginning with 23, 24, and 25 up to 2508451, are being warned not to consume them.
The government is particularly concerned that some of these products may still be in consumers’ or AAFES’ freezers or refrigerators.
This extensive recall highlights ongoing concerns about food safety regulations and labeling requirements.
In 2023, sesame became the ninth food allergen required to be listed on packaging under the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act.
Yet, these products apparently continued to be produced with undisclosed sesame for years afterward.
The company has claimed that “there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.”
However, the massive scale of this recall – nearly 500,000 pounds of food products – raises serious questions about quality control in the food supply chain, especially for products destined for military personnel.
Hearthside Food Solutions has been contacted for further comments, but the company has not provided additional information about how this massive labeling error occurred or what steps it is taking to prevent similar issues in the future.
Anyone concerned about potential illness or allergic reaction should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Military families should carefully check their refrigerators and freezers and return or dispose of any affected products.
