(Patriot.Buzz) – The United States House of Representatives censured Representative Al Green (D-TX) for disrupting President Trump’s address to Congress.

In a clear message about respect for the presidency, the House voted 224-198 to formally condemn Green’s outburst, with even 10 Democrats joining Republicans to enforce proper decorum.

This marks the first time in American history a lawmaker has been censured for heckling during a presidential speech.

Green’s moment of defiance came during President Trump’s address two days earlier when the Texas Democrat shouted, “You have no mandate” in response to Trump’s claims about the November 5 election.

After ignoring Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) warnings to maintain order, the sergeant-at-arms physically removed Green from the chamber, creating a dramatic scene that shocked viewers nationwide.

Representative Dan Newhouse (R-WA), who introduced the censure resolution, made clear this action was necessary to uphold congressional standards.

“This resolution is offered in all seriousness, something that I believe we must do in order to get us to the next level of conduct in this hallowed chamber,” Newhouse declared during the floor debate.

The formal censure procedure required Green to stand in the well of the House while Speaker Johnson read the resolution aloud.

Rather than showing remorse, Green and fellow Democrats defiantly sang “We Shall Overcome” during the proceedings, turning what should have been a moment of reflection into a political spectacle.

Green’s censure represents the 28th such rebuke in American history and continues a concerning trend of declining respect for traditional governmental institutions.

While Democrats complained about double standards, pointing to GOP members who interrupted former President Joe Biden without facing similar consequences, Republicans emphasized that Green crossed a line by refusing to stop his disruption and forcing his physical removal.

Speaker Johnson defended his decision to eject Green, stating the congressman had multiple opportunities to cease his interruptions but chose to continue disrupting the proceedings.

Despite facing one of Congress’s most severe punishments, Green showed no regret, defiantly stating he was acting according to his conscience.

This stubborn refusal to acknowledge wrongdoing demonstrates exactly why formal censure was necessary – to uphold standards of conduct essential to the functioning of government institutions.

While censure does not remove a member from office, it can cause significant reputational damage and serve as a powerful reminder that certain behaviors are unacceptable regardless of political affiliation.

Despite increasing political polarization, the bipartisan support for Green’s censure proves that respect for the presidency and congressional decorum still matter to many lawmakers.
