(Patriot.Buzz) – In a shocking betrayal of national security, a U.S. Army soldier has been arrested for selling confidential phone records, potentially compromising the privacy of top government officials, including Kamala Harris and President-elect Donald Trump.

Cameron John Wagenius, a soldier with the III Armored Corps based at Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), was arrested in mid-December in Texas.

Federal authorities have charged him with two counts of unlawfully transferring confidential phone records information, each carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence and hefty fines.

The charges against Wagenius are part of a larger investigation into sensitive customer records data breaches.

Moreover, Cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs reported that Wagenius used the online alias “Kiberphant0m,” further demonstrating the soldier’s deliberate attempts to conceal his illegal activities.

The case proceedings have been transferred to Washington state, where Wagenius will face the full force of the law.

During a court hearing, he acknowledged understanding his rights and charges and waived his right to a detention hearing in Waco.

This move suggested a potential plea deal in the works, though justice demanded nothing less than the maximum sentence for such a grievous breach of national security.

This incident is not isolated as it is connected to a broader network of cyber criminals, including Connor Moucka, arrested in Canada and facing extradition to the U.S., and John Binns, currently jailed in Turkey for a separate hacking incident.

Allison Nixon from cybersecurity company Unit 221B played a crucial role in identifying Wagenius after receiving threats from Moucka’s hacking group.

This collaboration between private sector cybersecurity experts and law enforcement demonstrates the multi-faceted approach needed to tackle modern cyber threats.

While the Department of Justice and FBI’s silence on the case is concerning, this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats to national security, not just from foreign adversaries but from within their own ranks.
