(Patriot.Buzz) – In a shocking betrayal of hardworking Americans, the IRS is failing to protect taxpayers from identity theft even after receiving billions from the Biden administration.
Nearly 500,000 victims are left waiting for justice as the agency drags its feet, taking an astounding two years to resolve cases.
This gross incompetence leaves honest citizens vulnerable while fraudsters run wild with their personal information.
Identity theft occurs when criminals file fake tax returns using stolen Social Security numbers to claim refunds that rightfully belong to law-abiding taxpayers.
The IRS’ sluggish response to this crisis is inexcusable, especially considering the agency received a massive $80 billion boost from the so-called Inflation Reduction Act.
Instead of using these funds to protect Americans, the IRS seems more interested in expanding its reach into the lives of ordinary citizens.
National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins did not mince words in her blistering criticism of the agency’s failures.
“IRS delays in resolving identity theft victim assistance cases are unconscionable,” Collins declared.
She highlighted the severe impact on taxpayers who desperately need their refunds for basic living expenses.
The IRS’ mishandling of identity theft cases is particularly alarming for Americans who have long been wary of the agency’s overreach and political bias.
For instance, the IRS was involved in a dramatic scandal in 2013, when it unfairly targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.
This latest development only reinforces concerns about the agency’s competence and intentions.
While the IRS claims to be “working on improvements,” its track record speaks louder than its empty promises.
The agency’s decision to reassign specialized identity-theft caseworkers during critical periods has only worsened the problem, leaving victims in financial limbo for months or even years.
The agency’s incompetence in handling identity theft cases is a reminder of why many Americans are skeptical of big government and its ability to protect their interests.
To protect themselves from the IRS’ failures, taxpayers are advised to take matters into their own hands.
Filing returns early and electronically can help prevent fraudsters from stealing refunds.
The IRS offers an identity protection PIN, but relying solely on government protection seems risky given its track record.
“Don’t wait until April 15. Don’t wait till October 15. Get your return in, and then no one else can file after it,” advises tax expert Adam Brewer.
“The other way to do it is file electronically, because you could file the first week of February, but if you file by paper it might sit there for a couple weeks, couple months even,” he continued.
