(Patriot.Buzz) – The Greensboro Police Department mourns the loss of a brave police officer as he paid the ultimate price while protecting his community, gunned down by a criminal inside a Food Lion supermarket.
See the tweet below.
Officer Michael Horan, a dedicated law enforcement professional and U.S. Coast Guard veteran, lost his life responding to reports of an armed individual.
Officer Horan responded to a call about a man with a gun at a Food Lion in Greensboro, North Carolina, but what should have been a routine response turned deadly when gunshots rang out inside the store.
Witness Ramona Miller recounted the terrifying moment:
“We were on our way out and I was purchasing a lottery ticket and I was just sitting there and heard a ‘pop-pop’ and then ‘pop-pop-pop.’ I think I heard five shots. At first I didn’t know it was a shooting … but an employee yelled out, ‘Shooting! Shooting!'”
The late officer, who joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2018 after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard since 2000, was known for his unwavering commitment to duty and bravery.
His exemplary service was recognized in 2019 when he received a lifesaving award for rescuing a man and his son at the beach. Assistant Police Chief Milford J. Harris praised Officer Horan’s dedication:
“He was an excellent officer. He had an outstanding reputation inside the department and in the community.”
This heartbreaking loss comes just days before Christmas, leaving a family shattered and a community in mourning.
Even more tragically, Officer Horan is the second Greensboro officer killed in the line of duty in the past 12 months, following the death of Officer Philip Dale Nix on December 30, 2023.
While a suspect has been taken into custody, questions remain about the circumstances that led to this senseless act of violence.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry and working to bring justice to Officer Horan and his family.
As the community grapples with this devastating loss, state Senator Michael Garrett emphasized the urgent need for improved safety measures and resources for law enforcement officers:
“During what should be a time of joy and celebration, another brave officer has been shot in the line of duty. Another family’s holiday season forever changed.”
Governor Roy Cooper (D-NC) has mobilized state law enforcement to assist in Greensboro, demonstrating a commitment to supporting local authorities in the wake of this tragedy.
