(Patriot.Buzz) – In a shocking turn of events, Democrat Mike Zimmer has clinched victory in Iowa’s Senate District 35, a stronghold that President Donald Trump won by a staggering 21 points in the last election.

This unexpected flip raises alarming questions about the stability of conservative support in traditionally Republican areas.

Zimmer, a longtime local educator and Central DeWitt School Board president, secured nearly 52% of the vote, defeating Republican candidate Katie Whittington.

The final tally showed Zimmer with 4,812 votes to Whittington’s 4,473, a margin that has shocked conservative circles.

Senate District 35, which includes Maquoketa, parts of southwest Jackson County, Clinton County, and eastern Scott County, has been a reliable Republican stronghold.

The seat was vacated by Chris Cournoyer, a Republican who became Iowa’s lieutenant governor in December after winning the district by a commanding 22-point margin in 2022.

However, this sudden shift in voter behavior is deeply concerning as it is questionable how a district that overwhelmingly supported President Trump just months ago fell into Democrat hands.

It appears that Zimmer’s campaign focused heavily on local issues, potentially exploiting any dissatisfaction with Republican leadership.

Zimmer stated:

“I am honored that the residents of Senate District 35 have put their faith in me to represent them in the Iowa Senate. Our campaign’s values of hard work and fairness resonated with a bipartisan coalition of voters in Clinton, Jackson and Scott counties. I’m looking forward to working on behalf of the people of Eastern Iowa to help working Iowans get ahead, support our public schools and teachers, and help lower the cost of living.”

Democrats are already crowing about this victory, with Senate Democrat Leader Janice Weiner boldly claiming:

“Mike Zimmer’s victory in Senate District 35, which President Trump won in November with nearly 60% of the vote, is a clear rejection of the Republican agenda led by Kim Reynolds and the Senate Republicans that have failed Iowans.”

This brazen attempt to rewrite the narrative and undermine conservative leadership cannot go unchallenged.

While this loss is concerning, it is crucial to remember that Republicans still maintain a strong 34-16 majority in the Iowa Senate.

Yet, this upset serves as a wake-up call. The liberal media is already spinning this as a sign that the GOP’s popularity is waning.
